Introduction
Gender refers to the social and cultural constructions of masculinities and femininities. In other words, it refers to cultural differences among different individuals (Oakley, 2015). For decades, scholars have been studying and analyzing various ways in which gender affects or acts to shape cultural beliefs and practices, lives, and the social and economic organization of individuals. A study in this field covers major theories and researches how different people behave (Oakley, 2015). In society, gender is a crucial consideration in development. Studies establish that gender dictates the social norms and power structures that impact the different opportunities available to men and women. In the study of this topic, scholars describe that globally there are more women than men that live in poverty. Additionally, they describe that women are less likely than their gender counterparts to receive basic education. This paper will be critically analyzing how gender has affected our lives in a society in different circumstances.
Impact of gender in our lives
Gender has greatly affected our roles in society (Oyewumi, 2016). Gender roles have affected how women and men think, dress, and interact in our daily lives. Firstly, gender affects the different opportunities that an individual gets in life. For example, in our society, there is a perception that specific jobs are reserved for men, while others are reserved for women (Oyewumi, 2016). When a woman goes for an interview where the employer is seeking a truck driver or a construction manager, she would likely be turned down. Such kind of jobs is believed to require masculinity and therefore reserved for men. Secondly, gender affects how we speak or address in public functions. Men are prioritized or are given an upper hand when addressing pressing issues in society. They are believed to have versatile skills or ways of facing everyday problems in society. Also, gender affects the behavior of individuals (Oyewumi, 2016). For example, women have a habit of not walking in the dark because they are perceived as weaker elements. Men, on the other side, will walk in the dark as they consider themselves courageous and can deal with any danger, whatsoever. Therefore, our daily lives and the activities that we do are affected by gender to a large extend.
Description of the gendered self
My gendered self is female, stated by my biological basis. In my everyday life, gender is a sense of one’s gender. Also, it is a result of socialization, and it has a biological basis. Additionally, in my everyday life, gender identity is perceived as binary, and individuals are identified either male or female. Gender has affected my everyday life through the way I socialize and my normal way of dressing and eating. For example, on a personal level, being forced to hang out with women because of the social perceptions that when you hang out with men, you must be having a love relationship with them. Also, I consume light food because heavy foods...
