Recent developments in the world of technology over the years have seen an improvement in the options people have in information technology for use in daily life. The developments have eased how people conduct activities in all aspects of life, from banking to studying and working. Although information technologies have potential for good application in many sectors, the platform also offers a wide range of loopholes that anyone with the knowledge can exploit and put to destructive use. Such negative applications are what the law enforcement refers to as digital crime and digital terrorism. Cyber terrorists have a plethora of tools in the world of information technology to use for committing criminal activities with ease. The law enforcement agencies and the government have had to develop policies, laws and strategies to counter the criminal acts, and protect the common people from malicious acts of violence in the internet. The essay explores the counter measures law enforcement agencies utilize to counter digital crime and terrorism, and what the future may hold in terms of the methods employed in the efforts.
Rapid growth of information technology has resulted to an increase in cybercrime and terrorism. The crimes involves the use of propaganda, psychological mechanisms, communication with other terrorists and formation of networks, raising funds for criminal activity, data mining, training and recruitment (Zerzri, 2018). The activities have forced law enforcement agencies to develop technological strategies for intervention against the criminal activities on cyberspace. There are challenges that hinder the cooperation of local law enforcement agencies and federal law enforcement. The national cybersecurity stratagem lack several elements that are crucial to the endeavor ("CYBERSECURITY National Strategy, Roles, and Responsibilities Need to Be Better Defined and More Effectively Implemented", 2018). There are no stipulations for the measurement of milestones, performance, resources, costs, main plyers in the responsibilities and division of roles, and association to supplementary and complementary documents. The committee whose research identified the gaps suggested the development of a cybersecurity strategy under the federal docket. The strategy should contain all the main aspects of a desirable strategy to provide an effective context for the implementation of cybersecurity endeavors, and ensure that the activities will result to progress in the management and counterattack of cybercrime activities. The strategy would also provide a platform to hold federal agencies and departments responsible for making improvements in areas that pose a challenge in cybersecurity ("CYBERSECURITY National Strategy, Roles, and Responsibilities Need to Be Better Defined and More Effectively Implemented", 2018). The strategy would cater for the development of risk-based platforms, detection, response to and mitigation of cybercrime incidents, promotion of education, awareness and planning amongst the anti-cybercrime taskforce, and addressing challenges in the cybersecurity platform worldwide.
