Behavioural psychologists such as John B. Watson suggested that socialization and employment of techniques such as behaviour modification are powerful forces capable of significantly affecting human developmental outcomes. Recently, science and the media have presented us with information which suggests that many of our so-called desirable and undesirable traits are affected by our genetic codes. If people exhibit violent criminal behaviour, it is suggested, they may carry genes that code for these traits.
Whereas a psychologist might recommend counselling and other forms of therapy to help people deal with problematic traits, modern genomic science has us focus on dealing with the problem genes and the metabolic conditions they support.
Should the fact that we have an extensive range of techniques available to us as social scientists support the argument that we do not need, and should not pursue, genomic solutions to human behavioural problems?
