The Spiral of Silence Theory and How it Impacts the Fur Clothing Industry
The Spiral of Silence Theory is a political science and mass communication theory that attempts to explain why people tend to conceal their opinions or preference when they belong to the minority. First proposed in 1974 by Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann the Theory is based on three premises: (a) quasi-statistical perception or the capability to gauge the prevailing public opinion, (b) the fear of isolation and the knowledge of behaviors that can lead to social isolation and (c) the unwillingness of the losing camp to express their views ADDIN Mendeley Citation{2c3b5d9e-3e67-469e-b8f9-d082fe6ff5cd} CSL_CITATION { "citationItems" : [ { "id" : "ITEM-1", "itemData" : { "author" : [ { "family" : "Noelle-Neumann", "given" : "Elisabeth" } ], "edition" : "2nd editio", "id" : "ITEM-1", "issued" : { "date-parts" : [ [ "1993" ] ] }, "publisher" : "University of Chicago Press", "title" : "The spiral of silence: public opinion, our social skin", "type" : "book" }, "uris" : [ "/documents/?uuid=2c3b5d9e-3e67-469e-b8f9-d082fe6ff5cd" ] } ], "mendeley" : { "previouslyFormattedCitation" : "(Noelle-Neumann, 1993)" }, "properties" : { "noteIndex" : 0 }, "schema" : "https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json" } (Noelle-Neumann, 1993). Using a number of survey methods, Neuman discovered that public opinion depended on who speaks up and who keeps silent and that those who have greater strength are more willing to speak up, and are able to gain greater support for their cause.
When it comes to animal rights, there is no other organization more outspoken than People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, or more popularly known as PETA. They have published numerous researches and position papers explaining that fur farming is not only unethical, it is also an environmental hazard. According to a PETA factsheet, 85% of the fur industry`s produce come from animals bred primarily for fur harvesting. These animals lead short and painful lives those used for breeding are kept 5 to 6 years in small cages while those marked for harvesting only have 6 months to 1 year to live.
