Hearing is more of a physical process that involves using the ear as a sense, while listening takes a deeper interpretation of the sound that is heard (Christian, n.d.). Another key difference is that listening requires invoking of the cognitive function while hearing needs no effort and is often passive. Listening behavior changes accordingly depending on the settings.
