Overcoming the Fear of Death
With the belief in an omnipresent and eternal God, one may defy the fear of death by associating hopes with the afterlife. Subtracting the God from the equation may first seem appalling, but a deeper second-thought may give a person reasons for not fearing the death. Understanding the nature of death and possible consequences may fill an atheist's mind with lasting comfort.
While thinking about death, it is wise to dissociate fears traditionally linked to this concept. While approaching rationally, a recommended route is to consider all probabilities. Mostly, atheists do not believe in the existence of God and, thus, distance themselves from the religiously inspired idea of 'afterlife' (Blech, 2018). To them, death means a state that can be best defined as "ceasing to exist" (Warburton, 1999). If this scenario is assumed true, the fear seems redundant. It is the same state in which a person remains before their existence. There is no denial of the truth that a person does not exist until he is born. Non-existence should not be confused with darkness, pain, or dissolution as a person may intuitively do. It is a state of oblivion where 'nothing' exists. Therefore, the idea of non-existence can be comforting if taken in its purest form. It means that a person will not exist and will not be there to care about his non-existence.
