Dignity in Social Care

This assignment will use academic resources from the United Kingdom (UK) to help you to understand further the modern concept of ‘dignity’ in social care, a theoretical perspective developed in Europe, which is gaining traction in the United States. The resources are predominantly from the UK because of the advanced stage of ‘Dignity in Social Care’ concepts, largely due to more widespread and integrated social care systems in the UK and Europe. In the assignment, you will review the UK resources and then respond to the prompts for the body of your research paper, which will provide details for application of ‘Dignity in Social Care’ concepts in the US. While the concept is at an earlier stage in the US, there are resources in the Ashford Library which cover the US – be sure to seek these out using ProQuest to support your paper. To access the ProQuest database, click on the Journal Articles button on the library homepage. Select the ProQuest (Search All ProQuest Databases) link. To limit results to the U.S. try using United Sates as an additional search term, or you can use the location limiter on the left side of your search results page to filter your results to those pertaining to the U.S. [Be sure to present your paper according to the ‘Assignment requirements’ listed below.]

Dignity in Social Care for the Elderly
Numerous studies have indicated that there are a host of factors which are involved in the promotion of care. These dignity factors are known to contribute to a person’s sense of self-respect, and they are supposed to be present at all times during care. Dignity in social health care results in two probable outcomes. To begin with, a patient may end up losing control of their emotional or mental functions, which may result in individuals failing to recognize their sense of dignity (Kinnear, Williams, & Victor, 2014). Secondly, the loss of control and dignity may result in the use of restraints by the authorities to contain any unbecoming behavior from the said persons for care to be administered. It is during this time that the caregivers are supposed to exercise a great deal of decorum and communication when handling such patients. In most cases, the time required to show care and dignity in most of the health facilities is limited, especially when the patients are not cooperative in the precincts of the available time. This paper seeks to explore how dignified care for the elderly people is understood and conveyed by health and social care professionals and the policies to promote and expedite, or deter, the delivery of dignified care.
A body of growing evidence has indicated that the elderly in the UK are still being compromised regarding dignified care. The feeling of security and safety or being treated as an individual have been top on the agenda in the UK health facilities (Kinnear, Williams, & Victor, 2014).
Eight Dignity Factors in Social Care
Dignity is when someone respects the other person’s time and ways of life. It involves privacy, respect, self-worth, and autonomy (Cass, Robbins, & Richardson, 2008). According to scie.org.uk (2013), the following are deemed the dignity factors:
* Choice and control – it is when individuals are allowed to decide on the way they receive their care and how they live. For example, allowing people to know and understand their past achievements and lives by letting them be in control of what happens to them.
* Communication – it involves speaking to others in a particular way and having to listen to what others have to say to have a smooth dialogue between the service and the workers. For example, acknowledging the age of the persons, one is addressing, in this case, the elderly. People should be allowed to voice their concerns.
* Nutritional care and proper eating habits- offering nutritious and appetizing meals as per the expectations of the individuals. It also involves offering the needed support with eating when required.
* Management of pain- improving the quality of life of those persons with pain by alleviating the pain they are suffering from. This can be done by offering them the right therapy and medication.
* Stepping up hygiene- people should be allowed to maintain their levels of hygiene. This is to ensure that the hygiene will not affect the treatment being offered.
* Offering practical assistance- providing that little bit of aid, but at the same time mai...
