Often, people from English dominated cultures travel to China for business, official functions or to study. Chinese have a rich and diverse culture which highly contrasts with other cultures especially English cultures. The worst of it is that these Chinese cultural aspects are widely spread in almost every aspect of life and one cannot avoid. Thus, one has to be aware of theses cultures to avoid embarrassment as a result of misunderstanding them. This article captures some of the differences in cultures between English and Chinese.
To begin with, Chinese differs from English in the utterances. For example, as a way of praising somebody who works extremely hard and is mighty, Chinese would liken him or her to a cow while an English person would liken to a horse. This cultural difference is brought about by the ancient use of the cows by Chinese to cultivate the land or pull the carts. In English countries, horses were used to perform such functions. Also, English and Chinese cultures differ in the way people mention names. In English, people mention names of individuals irrespective of their seniority. The only difference would be the use of the titles such as "Mr" or "Mrs." English people would also use professional titles such as Engineer mark or Doctor Ann. In contrast, Chinese people do not mention their seniors using their names; it is an offense, and one may be considered to be very rude to call a senior by name. A Chinese can only be allowed to call someone by name if that person is of his or her age or younger.
In addition, English and Chinese differ with respect to treatment of privacy. People from English languages treat things pertaining to their age, body size, marital status, careers among others to be secretive and one would feel embarrassed when required to expose such information. This is different from Chinese people who like to know more about one another's occupation, age, body size and much more personal information. To Chinese, such questions show mindfulness about one another while to English cultures, such questions are perceived to be demeaning, and only a child can be asked. Also, English and Chinese culture differ in the way of expression. English culture is marked by individualism while Chinese culture is dominated by collectivism. English culture emphasizes that individuals develop self-confidence and freedom to express their ideas publicly. On the contrary, Chinese are encouraged to keep ideas for themselves, or if they should be publicly announced, it should be aired through established channels in the community.
