The dual-diagnosis disorder is not uncommon by any means. “Currently, 4 million individuals in the United States are thought to have a concurrent substance abuse and mental illness problem (Doweiko, 2015, p. 342).” This staggering number brings to light the necessity of medical providers to not only be aware of the issues but to be prepared to properly assess and recommend treatment programs.

There is a need to understand how the co-morbid conditions affect the ability of a dually diagnosed patient to cope with both mental and substance abuse disorders. The idea that mental illnesses are worsened by mental abuse should be considered, and at other times, people use substances to get relief. There is also the case of self medication where people with mental disorders then use substances. The case for considering the co-occurring co-morbidity and co-existing conditions is that this improves intervention. In any case, the dual diagnosed clients may admit about one disorder to shield the other, increasing the risk that only one disorder is resolved (Doweiko 2015). Even though, mental and substance abuse disorders are treatable, misconceptions and stigmatization associated with dual-diagnosis means that more efforts should be made to improve health outcomes.
