Women in Congress
As of 2021, the Women in Congress are a diverse group in terms of age, race, and ethnicity. There are currently 396 women in Congress in the 117th Congress. Of these 396 women, 222 are Democrats, and 116 are Republicans (Congressional Research Service, 2022). This is the first time in history that there have been more Republican women in Congress than Democratic women (Congressional Research Service, 2022). The women in Congress are also diverse in terms of race and ethnicity. There are currently 54 Black women in Congress, which is the highest number ever (Congressional Research Service, 2022). There are also 23 Hispanic or Latina women in Congress, the highest number ever (Congressional Research Service, 2022). In addition, there are 16 Asian-American or Pacific Islander women in Congress.
