The colonialism era was not a period that interested everyone, especially those from the colonialized nations. During this period, Africa was the main culprit as it exposed its weakness to defend itself against the colonial powers. The scramble for Africa was real, and the European colonizers could take over as many countries as it could, with some taking over more than ten countries. Slavery, looting of African resources, and killing of African people subjected the black race to prejudice, which later attracted the attention of black intellects such as Aime Cesaire and Leopold Sedar Senghor. Cesaire and Sengor formed the Negritude movement, which gained a lot of popularity in France for debating on colonialism through writing. This discussion argues how Cesaire uses his art in poetry to revolt against colonialism.
Aime Cesaire was born and raised in France. During his education life in Paris, he was subjected to racism and referred to as “nigre” in the streets. This caused him to express how the black race is subjected to discrimination and prejudice in the modern society in which he used poems to do so. A poem is a piece of literature made up of stanzas. The stanzas are made up of brief sentences that are made up of well-chosen words with similar sound patterns with a fluent flow of sense. Poems have unique techniques such as meter, rhythm, and alliteration. Cesaire used poetry to revolt and discourse colonialism that had dominated, especially after the second world. Revolt means to contest oppression actions that negatively affect the mind or the body. In his work, Cesaire used poems to articulate the feelings of the oppressed Africans and those in the diaspora. All of his work condemns colonialism and racism that have prevailed after world war I. Cesaire, through his work that got attention from various scholars, led to the surrealism revolution that used various forms of art to join hands in supporting Negritude revolution that began after world war I.
Cesaire condemned colonialism. This was one of the main agendas for his revolutionary movement; Negritude. Even though there was little peace in the European Union that existed curtesy of surrealism, black slavery still existed, and blacks were subjected to intense oppression. Harsh treatment to the black slaves made him reflect on his peaceful African life.
