My chosen niche is the stages of change, which is also called the Transtheoretical model. This model deals with the analysis of experiences of drug addicts and smokers who quit smoking of their accord as well as addicts who require the help of a coach to understand how other people managed to quit without assistance. This model determines that individuals quit using drugs only if they are ready and willing to do so (Boston University, 2019). Therefore, the Transtheoretical model is a tool of intentional change which pays attention to an individual's decision-making. The Transtheoretical model maintains that addict transitions through six phases of change, which include pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination (Boston University, 2019, para.2). Each phase is characterized by distinct interventional approaches, which are critical in helping to transition an individual to the subsequent stage.
One of the strengths of the stages of change model is its ability to instill stimulus control in an individual. This, in effect, helps to re-engineer the surroundings to incorporate such factors as cues and reminders that encourage and support the healthy behavior of a person and discourage unhealthy behavior (Boston University, 2019). On the contrary, this model is limited by the fact that the transition between one stage to the other is separated by arbitrary lines that lack predetermined strat6egies of how to establish an individual’s stage of change. Additionally, the developed questionnaires that are used to designate individuals to their supposed stages of change are not usually validated and standardized.
