Should the US withdraw its troops in Afghanistan?
October 7, 2011 marks the 10th year of the US war against Afghanistan`s terrorist forces and Americans are asking, when will the war stop? With economic recession in full swing, and unemployment rates still at record high, citizens are calling for austerity measures: stop spending on military activities and focus instead on the rebuilding of the US economy.
The call to end the US-Afghanistan war is no longer a surprise. In 2009, statements were released as to the viability of success in this endeavor. "The war already is 50 percent longer than the combined US involvements in the two world wars" ADDIN Mendeley Citation{12c2d96e-0c49-40dc-b6ba-eaf5b4b6b18a} CSL_CITATION { "citationItems" : [ { "id" : "ITEM-1", "itemData" : { "author" : [ { "family" : "Will", "given" : "George F." } ], "container-title" : "The Washington Post", "id" : "ITEM-1", "issued" : { "date-parts" : [ [ "2009", "9", "1" ] ] }, "title" : "Time for the U.S. to Get Out of Afghanistan", "type" : "article-newspaper" }, "uris" : [ "/documents/?uuid=12c2d96e-0c49-40dc-b6ba-eaf5b4b6b18a" ] } ], "mendeley" : { "previouslyFormattedCitation" : "(Will, 2009)" }, "properties" : { "noteIndex" : 0 }, "schema" : "https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json" } (Will, 2009). How sure is the government that the Afghan war will not end up like the Saigon regime where thousands of American soldiers died and millions of dollars were wasted?
In a report prepared for the US Congress ADDIN Mendeley Citation{c6e00960-11e8-41e1-bceb-b1f237902d07} CSL_CITATION { "citationItems" : [ { "id" : "ITEM-1", "itemData" : { "author" : [ { "family" : "Belasco", "given" : "Amy" } ], "id" : "ITEM-1", "issued" : { "date-parts" : [ [ "2011" ] ] }, "title" : "The Cost of Iraq, Afghanistan and Global War on Terrorist Operations Since 9/11", "type" : "report" }, "uris" : [ "/documents/?uuid=c6e00960-11e8-41e1-bceb-b1f237902d07" ] } ], "mendeley" : { "previouslyFormattedCitation" : "(Belasco, 2011)" }, "properties" : { "noteIndex" : 0 }, "schema" : "https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json" } (Belasco, 2011), it was revealed that spending in the Afghanistan war grew from $4.4 billion to $6.7 billion between 2009 and 2010.
