Critical Reflection: Climate Justice
Climate justice seeks to alleviate the unequal burden placed upon people because of climate change. Chatterton et al (2013) highlight on the significance of climate justice as articulated through political forces as a means to bring change on climate change negotiations.
According to Hugo (2010), environmental change influences migration, though other factors like economic, social and demographic pressure also affect migration. For instance, the Asian Pacific region migration was affected by adverse climate change. Migration from areas most affected by climate change can occur voluntarily or people can be forced by circumstances, but environmental refugees are left with little choice on where to go. This is a critical reflection on climate justice, highlighting on risks of climate change and ways to mitigate loss from environmental change.
Countries suffer different threats from climate change, and Bangladesh is prone to climate change effects because of its topography and low lying areas (Hossain et al., 2012). The country faces unique challenges owing to the high population of people residing near coastal areas, as the rising sea levels are likely to submerge many areas in the future. To highlight on the need to have climate justice, is the fact that with climate change, many people will be forced to vacate their homes and seek refuge in other areas, and will eventually have to find new occupations and jobs. Flooding, storm surges and salinity intrusion will make it harder to fight poverty among the vulnerable Bangladeshis residing near the coastal region.
One of the emerging trends of climate change is that it is increasingly intertwined with politics. Arising out of this observation is the notion that neo liberal policies are in conflict with the need to tackle climate change. Seeking profits and growth with little regard to climate change has hence become a contentious issue among supporters and opponents of climate change talks.
