The Conflict Tradition
When coming up with the conflict theory, Karl Marx believed that societies are always in a state of perpetual conflict mainly because of competition for resources. In discussing social class and crime, Marx would feel vindicated in his assertions because they seem to coincide with what he said in the 19th century. Miller (2015) notes that people from lower social classes are likely to be arrested and convicted. This justifies Marx’s belief that people are in competition for limited resources and that those with less will be forced to steal or use force to fend for themselves. Aside from the above, Marx would also see a correlation between power, wealth, and greed. As people get wealthier, the higher the likelihood to want to remain at the top, and Marx would describe this as a perfect representation of conflict theory.
