Comparing homeland security research products Student: Professor: Course title: Date: Comparing homeland security research products NYPD Radicalization Report – Executive Summary The research question being addressed is as follows: How does the intention to carry out a terrorist attack form, harden and result in an actual attack or attempted attack? The report aims to support law enforcement officers and policymakers in America by providing an in-depth understanding of the type of threat the country faces domestically in the United States. In addition, the report seeks to contribute to the debate amongst law enforcement and intelligence agencies on how to properly counter this growing threat by better understanding what really makes up the process of radicalization (Silber & Bhatt, 2009). In support of the research, the literature that was reviewed includes literature on radicalization, phases and process of radicalization, and radicalization in the United States. To develop the research and the subsequent report, the type of research methods that were used include real-world case studies. The researchers used several case studies including the following: the Toronto 18 Case that prevented an attack in 2006 June; Amsterdam’s Hofstad Group; July 2005 attack in London; March 2004 attack in Madrid; and Australia’s Operation Pendennis that frustrated an attack in 2005 November. Several United States homegrown terrorism cases and 2 New York City cases were also analyzed. These include Northern Virginia; Lackawana, New York; New York City, the Al Muhajiroun Two; New York City, Herald Square Subway; and Portland Oregon (Silber & Bhatt, 2009). The methods were qualitative in nature. This is primarily because the data gathered are nonnumeric. Moreover, the researchers have not manipulated variables or introduced treatments. The research for the report was collected through the use of both existing data and surveys which helped in addressing the research question. Besides the use of existing data on the subject matter, views of various outside experts on the topic have also been sought by the researchers. The report conclusions and analysis of the report were effectively supported by the research and data presented in the report. DHS Right-wing Extremism report The research question that was addressed is as follows: how is the current political and economic climate fuelling resurgence in radicalization and recruitment? In support of this research, the literature that was reviewed include literature on the resurgence in radicalization and recruitment; the present political and economic climate; and rightwing extremists in the 1990s (Department of Homeland Security, 2009). To develop this research and the subsequent report, the research methods that were utilized were qualitative in nature since the researcher has not imposed his operational definitions of variables on respondents.
