Identity is the state of being the same under varying conditions. It refers to the conception, beliefs, qualities and expressions that make an individual or group. An individual is defined by his/her qualities, beliefs and character which define his/her identity. Identity can be used for personal qualities that cannot be expressed in a natural manner as far as a social category is concerned.
Through communication, an individual can build identity through the sharing of thoughts and opinions. Both verbal and non-verbal communications are vital in developing the identity. The two types of communication have characteristics such as conversation, choice, culture, identity, meaning and nexting. These features allow an individual make meaning out of his/her life thus taking control of their outcome. Individuals make decisions on what to share or not within a conversation. Culture influences meaning and response within communication. Nexting changes response to what happens by taking into account the next step of individual communication. All these features go a long way toward building an identity through communication (Stewart, 2012).
