Question 3-1: conflict typically appears when a group is in transition. State several forms of conflict you can expect in the types of groups you will lead. Consider group members suffering with substance use disorders. What are your own reactions to conflict? How will this influence your ability to help members recognize and work through conflicts?
Beth begins by explaining how conflict is one of the biggest threats to group cohesion (Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (U. S.) & JBS International, 2006). Although she outlines some strategies (or her own reaction) to conflict management, she fails to state the different forms of conflict that present in groups of substance use disorders. Her strategies in dealing with conflict in these groups also lack a clear-cut outline on how they (strategies) will influence her ability to help group members recognize and work through conflicts.
The professor’s answer provides an outline of the several forms of conflict in groups. Such forms may occur within a person, between two group members or between a counselor and group members (Kellermann, 1996). The professor notes that intragroup conflicts are very challenging because the counselor is required to manage the conflict and still maintain neutrality in the group. An example of such an intragroup is a substance abuse reform group focused on reforming past drug addicts and abusers. A conflict ensuing between two members of the group will require urgent attention from the counselor. The counselor must act fast in order to protect the group from collapsing due to different members taking sides in the conflict.
Carr reflects on a specific conflict: the hiring process for new mentors. In Carr’s example, assuring group members of equality in treatment and handling of issues as well as respect is paramount to the existence of that group (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2014).
