Yolanda’s account of the chronic and acute physiological effects of alcohol use is accurate. According to Levinthal, alcohol attracts acute physiological effects such as eliciting toxic reactions, heat loss due to enlarging of blood vessels near the skin and inhibiting the body’s ability to absorb water by blocking the antidiuretic hormone. Additionally, it causes chronic effects such as blackouts, violence, and hostility (Levinthal, 2016, p. 162-164).

Chronic use of alcohol results in alcohol-induced brain damage due to depletion of thiamine. Thiamine is necessary for metabolizing carbohydrates to ensure normal functioning of cellular cells and synthesizing neurotransmitters (Martin, Singleton & Hiller-Sturmhofel, 2003, p. 134). Chronic alcohol consumption diminishes thiamine and affects its uptake from various foods. Other brain conditions include dementia, alcoholic cerebella degeneration, alcoholic myopathy and fetal alcohol syndrome.
