Mental Disorders and their Categorization
Comments on Each Student
Elyssa argues that the categorization of diagnoses has been modified to help better describe and diagnose symptoms (APA,2013). She says that mood is the only symptom that differentiates schizophrenia from psych affective disorders. It is, therefore, good to note that in schizophrenia, persistent mood symptoms are not part of the illness unlike in the schizoaffective disorder. However, some psychologists view schizoaffective disorder as being more closely related to bipolar or other major affective disorders. (Frederick J. Frese, Ph.D. Online forum)
Erika has majored on substance use disorders such as alcohol use disorder(APA,2013). However, she has not stated that the diagnostics class of substance-related and addictive disorders are divided into two subgroups: substance-related disorders and non-substance-related disorders. Substance-related disorders include substance use disorders, that is, alcohol use disorder, cannabis withdrawal, caffeine intoxication and inhalant related disorder. However, gambling is the only disorder listed under non-substance-related disorders, (MJ Ostacher-American Journal of Psychiatry,2015)
Dinara has concentrated on personality disorders of which she has clearly explained how they are classified according to their symptomatic similarities (APA,2013). However, she has not touched on the relationship between personality disorders and the conceptual issues in relating the normal and abnormal personality. According to the British journal of psychiatry (1983) patients with anxiety, phobic, and obsessional neurosis were more likely to show personality disorder than those with depressive neurosis.
Katherine says that the clustering of depressive disorders is necessitated by one similarity which is lowered level of mood, (APA,2013). There is, however, a primary-secondary distinction of these affective disorders. Findings show that the symptom patterns of secondary depressives are similar to primary depressives but are more severe (Arch Gen Psychiatry,1977). She has explained the major depressive disorder symptoms as per the American Psychiatric Association,2013.
