I strongly agree with what Butman & Yarhouse (2014) said about the “multifaceted approach” in teaching and dealing with psychopathology. I’ve heard a lot of instances when counseling sessions lasted longer than expected because the underlying relationship between the parties is mostly focused on being a ‘counselor and a patient.' Because of this, treatment becomes longer, and goals become harder to achieve because of a notion that “I’m sick and you’re not” sticks with the patient. As said by Parker, Valley, and Geary (1986), it is important for a counselor to acquire cultural knowledge to properly connect with the patients and tailor the treatment for their needs.

I like your opinion about the ‘efficiency’ of using the DSM as a template. In real life situations, being too overly dependent on a particular model might lessen the effectiveness of the treatment considerably. In my opinion, I believe that this is because when everything is based on a model, then those who fall outside of it are strongly considered as “deviants” and this might have an enormous effect on their souls and well-being. As you’ve said earlier, most of the approaches today to abnormal psychology refers to the 4Ds of abnormality, but I also believe that for a patient, being diagnosed with defect could affect them deep inside.
