Choice intervention strategies help the client question themselves whether specific behaviors are leading them towards their goals. Reality therapy puts a lot of emphasis on the vital importance connected relationships with others and goals about relatedness behavior (Cameron, 2009). It is at this point where behavioral approaches such as the rational-emotive therapy can be used collaboratively. This therapy talks of belief systems being capable of affecting one’s self-view. These views bring about dysfunctional behavior. These dysfunctional behaviors that arise from irrational, unrealistic and distorted thoughts can be corrected using the choice intervention strategies that emphasizes certain caring habits. They include, accepting, listening, encouraging and supporting. Just like other counseling theories reality theory advocates for the client to be independent enough to control their behavior and choose their belief system that will allow for reconnecting behaviors.

The Bowenian theory works to impart three significant lessons to the client namely re-engaging with self in relationship, self-advocacy, and self-determination. Through insight, the successful client can speak for herself or himself in a relationship (Hargrove, 2010). On the other hand, the structural theory is less concerned with the self of their clients, but rather with the boundary between self and others. It works to create change in the client by creating permeable boundaries. The successful client not only recognizes where they commence and end but also what is to be rejected and what should be taken in. Strategic family therapy is more action-oriented and behavioristic based on the fact that symptom elimination or reduction is as a result of therapeutic directives. This approach is more focused on the therapist arriving at the vivid understanding of family dynamics before enacting any intervention for reduction of symptoms.

A family genogram provides a picture of the dead and living people who legally, emotionally, and genetically compromise a family. This can span three, four or, even more, generations of relatives. Sensitive use of this tool is useful in the promotion of healthy changes when it comes to problems like family addictions.
