Then explain why these two biological factors are most important in the explanation of criminal behavior.

During the past couple of decades, an increasing interest in the examination of the relationship between biological factors and criminal behavior has occurred. Research has revealed strong evidence implicating biological factors in the development of criminal behavior. For instance, findings from empirical studies have shown that about one-half of the variance in criminal behavior is correlated with genetic factors. Moreover, neuroscience studies have detected deficiencies in the structure and the functioning of the brains of psychopaths, pathological liars, murderers, and serial killers. Still other studies have revealed that exposure to toxins in utero, such as prenatal exposure to drugs and alcohol, may alter the development of the brain and may predispose the child to criminal behavior later in life.

Beaver, DeLisi, Vaughn, & Barnes (2010), point out that the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) allele has been associated antisocial phenotypes, likely increasing the risk of criminal and maladaptive behaviors. The researchers further highlighted that males with MAOA alleles were more likely to be engaged in gang related activities and violence. This is especially when people have psychiatric problems, and exhibit aggressive behavior (Rhee & Waldman, 2002). Biological and genetic explanations of crime and criminal behavior include gender and family history with criminal behavior.
One of the likely explanations of criminal behavior and predatory offence is gender, as males are more likely to engage in criminal activity. Even though, socialization influences behavior, the differences between the male and female brain could explain criminality. The region of the brain associated with aggression is bigger among males (Wright & Beaver, 2012). Additionally, males are more likely to prefer dominance and status hierarchies, while genetic understanding of the traits associated with aggression would shed light on criminality (Wright & Beaver, 2012). Even though, not all aggressive people engage in criminality, they are more likely to be violent and commit crime than non-aggressive people.
