Paper #2:      Biography as Labor History

“My Life Is My Message.”  –Mahatma Gandhi

Biography is the account of a person’s life. As a narrative, it assumes the responsibility of explaining the period when a person lived as well as the places, the cultures, the organizations and the ideas that shaped an individual’s life. Furthermore, it examines how a person influenced family and community and, by contrast, how personal relationships influenced her or him or them. That person’s accomplishments as an actor or as a witness are important features of the biography.

The assignment for Paper #2 is that you write a short biography of a nineteenth-century person, explaining how and why the person whom you have selected represents an issue of (in)justice for society in the Americas during the industrial revolution.

Ultimately, you must answer in your five-page paper the question posed by the Great Leader of the Twentieth Century, Mahatma Gandhi: “What is the Message of this Person’s Life?”

Answering this question means looking beyond what a person has said or not said about their life. The challenge is to examine the message that you discern in actions, decisions, what the person experienced and/or what the person endured or changed.

“My life is my message” a few words stated by the great leader, Mahatma Gandhi, which makes us ponder regarding the kind of message one’s life can convey. The industrial revolution in the United States of America, around the late 18th to 19th century, brought about increased wealth, production of merchandise, innovation, and overall standard of living. But, before all these changes were made, the industry and the world itself were very much different, with manual labor as the main means of production. These also included issues such as child labor, inhumane working conditions, long working hours, and slavery. One of the distinguished names during the years of the industrial revolution is William Lloyd Garrison. In this paper, I will present the life lived by William Lloyd Garrison revealing the message promoting equality and liberty, which still resonates up to the present time.
“Enslave the liberty of but one human being and the liberties of the world are put in peril.” a statement of William Lloyd Garrison showcasing a unique man of his generation, with beliefs that are in opposition to what was considered normal for so long. He is an ideal subject not only because of his beliefs but due to the actions that he has done and the influence that he was able to spread to the people, awakening mankind regarding the oppressive system and inhumane issues, for us to be able to enjoy the kind of life we have today.
Different industries such as cotton and steel during the times prior to the industrial revolution was run by manual labor. African-Americans were slaves, denied human rights and treated as inferior to other social classes. Aside from the issue of racism and slavery, the unestablished rules and regulations regarding labor also caused issues. Women and children were also forced to work long hours in harsh working environment, and with insufficient wages (ushistory.org, 2020).
William Lloyd Garrison is a young distinguished abolitionist during the 1830s. He was born on the 10th day of December 1805, in Newburyport, Massachusetts. As a child, he did not receive an adequate education, due to his father leaving the family when William was only 3 years of age. In 1818, Garrison became the apprentice of Ephraim W. Allen, the Newburyport Herald’s editor, for seven years, providing exposure to the field of journalism. He also ventured into becoming the editor of the Free Press which failed and pushed him to seek employment in Boston’, and established the National Philanthropist. This was a paper expressing opposition to lotteries, Sabbath-breaking, intemperance, and war. In the same year, he met Benjamin Lundy. According to research, Benjamin Lundy is a big influence on William Lloyd Garrison. He was a Quaker, which means he is a member of a religious society who believes in God and the “inner light” of people. Benjamin Lundy exposed Garrison to the reality of slavery, and the evil that it brings to the people. After working for a short time as editor in Bennington, Vermont, he then went back to Boston and on Independence Day of the year 1829, Garrison delivered his first...
