How does this documentary make you feel about climate change? Does it make you more or less likely to believe that action needs to be taken to deal with climate change?
The documentary makes me feel that climate change is an immediate issue and that the world needs to wake up and act now. The world is indeed changing and at a faster rate than people are willing to admit. This change is a result of climate change and therefore, the world needs to act now to help ensure sustainability.
The documentary makes me more likely to believe that action needs to be taken to deal with climate change. People in China, for example, feel the effects of climate change on a daily basis. Their health is impacted and this is a testament to the problem of climate change. So, the world does need to act.
How would you try and alter the views of someone who is skeptical about the reality of climate change? Do documentaries like this help? Would you appeal to their wallets, their emotions, and their culture?
I would first tell them some of the consequences of climate change. These are everywhere and it will be easier to mention these before my next move. Knowing that theory would not help change their minds, I would then show them how the world is changing. First, I would use studies that showcase how climate change has impacted the world. Secondly, I would take them around the world and show them that climate is real and it is impacting the world. An area I would like to show them would be Greenland which is currently experiencing a slow but permanent change.
Yes. Documentaries like Before the Flood do help to educate the public and help people understand why the issue of climate change is immediate. However, as seen in the documentary, people often result to attacking the man behind the words and never take their time to assess the truthfulness of the words being said. Leonardo DiCaprio was attacked because of the stance he took. People ignored his message and his concerns. Regardless of the attacks, I do believe that when people see how climate change is impacting their surroundings in such documentaries, they are either moved to change their views or to seek to understand the issue of climate change more.
