Lottie is an elderly family member in her 60s’. By august next year, she will be celebrating her 68th birthday. One of the unique aspects about her is that Lottie is always cheerful and often engaged in some activities. It seems that she never lacks something to do to remain as active as possible. These aspects have been fundamental in maintaining her mobility, especially in her townhouse. As a result, this family member’s housing situation discussion will explore diverse aspects of her functioning and the capacity to maintain her housing arrangement for a quality life.
A review of the physical space of Lottie’s house and the neighboring settings highlights various features that significantly impact her functionality needs. For instance, as a frequent visitor, I find the environment serene with clean air, suitable for an individual with Asthma. Considering that she often becomes irritated by dust, smog, and other air pollutants, causing her to sneeze repeatedly or wheeze, the freshness within this area is critical for her health. Moreover, the house is spacious, with well-organized furniture that provides ample space for her to move around whenever she needs to stretch. Unlike many homes crowded with different items, there are barely any obstacles that could trigger a fall or be a barrier to her movements. I found this organization necessary because elderly falls are a leading cause of concern among individuals within her age bracket. Thus, these elements make it easy for her to remain mobile.
Another progressive aspect of the physical space in this house is that it has handrails along the stairs. Their integration is critical because she often uses them as support while going to the rooms upstairs or coming down to the living area. She mentioned one time that in the past, she barely noticed them. However, she acknowledges their value today because they assist her in avoiding exerting her body. The house has many other modifications uncommon in conventional settings, including a grab bar and a shower adjustable to the user’s height.
