Conclusion
Based on the data taken and plotted in the table 1, it could be seen that the total number of crimes increases as the population of students who enrolls in a university also increases. This relationship between the total number of crimes and the enrollment population, however, is much more apparent for cases of property crimes. According to FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, “property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft” CITATION ucrnd \l 1033 (ucr.fbi.gov, n.d.). In the table presented above, it could easily be seen that Simon state university has the most number of student enrollees, followed by Abalone University, Robert Long College, Marie Louis College, and lastly Franklinville College. The same order (highest to lowest number of student enrolees) as stated above could also be seen for cases of property crimes with Simon State University in the top (n=33) and Franklinville University (n=2) at the least. However, for the other types of crimes stated in table 1 – Forcible rape, Aggravated assault, and Arson – an exact and direct correlation between the number of student enrollees and total sum of categorical crimes could not be established. This is because the order of their number of their enrollees (highest to lowest) does not exactly mean the order for the cases of categorical crimes committed. One example why this correlation could not be established is in the case of forcible rape. Among the universities, Abalone University is reported to have the most number of forcible rapes amounting to 5 cases per 10,486 enrollees despite the fact that this number of enrollees is just half of Simon University with 3 cases per 20,573 students. Nevertheless, the general trend still shows that in most universities the larger number of student enrollees also indicate the larger number of total crimes committed.
