While there have been some positive developments, such as a growing economy and advances in social issues like LGBTQ+ rights, we also face numerous challenges. These include income inequality, political polarization, and ongoing conflicts abroad. So, while some aspects of our union are strong, there are also areas in which we need to improve.
2 Overall, what are your main takeaways from the American government course?
2 My American government course gave me a deeper understanding of the complexities and challenges of governing a democracy. One of the key takeaways was the importance of citizen participation in the democratic process. This participation can take many forms, from voting in elections to engaging in political activism. A Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement study found that young people who engage in political activities, such as protesting or contacting their elected officials, are more likely to vote in future elections (Banales et al., 2020).
Another important lesson was the need for checks and balances to prevent abuses of power by those in authority. The U.S. Constitution establishes a system of checks and balances between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches to ensure that no one branch has too much power. This system has been critical in maintaining our government's stability and preserving citizens' rights.
Federalism was also a key concept I learned in my American government course. This system of government, which divides power between the federal government and state governments, has been a hallmark of the American political system since its inception. Federalism allows for a balance of power between the central government and local governments, which can better address their respective communities' specific needs and concerns (Acharya & Scott, 2022).
Overall, my American government course gave me a greater appreciation for the complexities and challenges of governing a democracy. The course underscored the importance of citizen participation in the democratic process, the need for checks and balances to prevent abuses of power, and the value of federalism in promoting local autonomy and self-governance. While our nation faces many challenges, I am optimistic about our ability to overcome them by working together and upholding the principles that make our democracy strong.
