Chapter 11: Advocacy and Social Action with Populations at Risk
Regarding the advocacy and the social action with the highly populated regions at risk, social workers indicate that victims contribute immensely for their situations coupled with their interaction with the environment irrespective of them being disadvantaged and harmed through the actions of other people, communities, and organizations especially the homeless in the society. Therefore, the social workers should advocate on the impacts of discrimination, shun oppression, the population at risks, the action of the community, and economical to ensure the improvement of justice economically.
On a separate note, social workers help with numerous activities in support of the population who are at risk. Such activities include identification and recognition of the risks, the treatment differences in different groups before coming out with the best strategy for solving a particular problem. Secondly, several factors place people at risk concerning values, beliefs, and power. In most the individuals at risk come from the standard population hence they include lesbian, women and gay people. The social workers need to embrace advocacy, encourage the patience when taking social action as well as empowering different activities.
Advocating by the social worker in the society sometimes has limitations especially when factors such as the right of the person at risk and the problems in place unprofessional. In most cases, some of the social workers fail to ignore the professional values and ethics with no adherence to team work. However, it is important to analyze a conceptual model for social activities such as education, lobbying, demonstrations as well as explaining to the people the best ways for a change though the civil rights that can be used to protect the minority against discrimination. However, such social actions are militant models that only involve the use of power in a possessive manner instead of what one can do with such powers hence it escalates discrimination. Solving the problems of the victims in a society involves engaging the victims through Participatory Action research (PAC) where the victims participate in studying problems as well as taking the initiative to solve such issues.
Lastly, the social worker should embrace a legislative advocacy which requires a change in the regulations and the laws through opposing and pushing new laws through the popularity of ideas in the bill, and the cost of the plan among others. Therefore, the social worker has to be in a position to draft a law, know the supporters and lobby legislators to offer support to the bill.
