Academic Standards in the State of Texas
Summary of Teaching and Learning Changes
Due to student mobility, the state of Texas has implemented curriculum standards to be applied in every public school. The existing standards outline what students need to learn in every grade or course, and this is known as the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The State Board of Education (SBOE) has adopted these standards following an extensive input from educators and other stakeholders (Texas Education Agency, 2019a). The SBOE has the jurisdictive power of adopting TEKS for every subject in each curriculum and nominates parents, teachers, business, education representatives, and employers to serve in TEKS review committee. TEKS review offers information regarding SBOE’s process and previous and current reviews in different subjects, including English language, Spanish language, other foreign languages, science, mathematics, health education, social studies, physical education, fine arts, technology applications, career and technical education, and career and technical education.
The Curriculum Standards include information on the state of Texas curriculum, assessment, and guidelines. The English reading language arts (R/LA) staff works with the Student Assessment Division in developing reading and writing assessment of the state of Texas, assisting the Instructional Material Division to oversee the process of adopting instructional materials, and reviewing different certifications that apply to R/LA with the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) (Texas Education Agency, 2019b). The R/LA also provides information regarding Texas graduation requirements and dyslexia. In collaboration with the Student Support Division, the Curriculum Standards provides leadership and direction for Texas languages other than English (LOTE) programs for Kindergarten. Staff works to facilitate a number of statewide programs such as assisting in the process of providing LOTE instructional materials. It also maintains communication with the field associated with assessment, instruction, and curriculum and graduation requirements as per Chapter 74 of the Texas Administrative Code (Texas Education Agency, 2019c). These revised LOTE TEKS were effected during the 2017-2018 school year and include separate courses for levels between I and VII of classical and modern languages, Advanced Placement ® (AP) and International ® (IB courses, levels I-IV of American Sign Language, and other elective courses.
