A Class Divided
A Class Divided entails a movie that was written and directed by William Peters based on an experiment by Jane Elliot on third-graders. Elliot established an experiment to assist her students understand the consequences of discrimination or segregation. After Martin Luther King was murdered in 1968, Elliot’s third-graders were upset since they perceived him as their hero. Elliot divided her students into two primary groups, namely the blue and brown-eyed students. Those with brown eyes were considered dumber, poor listeners, slower, and their recess time was reduced by five minutes on the first day (“A Class Divided,” 1985). The following day, Elliot changed the roles, and brown-eyed third-graders were give better characteristics than the blue-eyed ones. Overall, young people who were given good characteristics became bullies, violent, and discriminated against the inferior group.
If Elliot’s experiment was done in a Greenwich elementary school classroom today, I believe the outcomes would be the same. In particular, students who will be considered superior, bright, and have good behaviors are likely to discriminate against their colle...
