Crossing the nonsexual boundary can enrich your psychotherapy. For instance, this client would have benefited more if you went beyond your boundaries to share with her about her loss without justifying her drug and substance abuse. This would have served as a treatment plan. She would have felt more connected to this therapy and the working relationship would have been stronger (Pope & Keith‐Spiegel, 2008). However, you should ensure that you are effective in providing therapy without disrupting your alliance or harming your clients.

With this knowledge, you would always be careful to cross your client-counselor relationship However, you can cross the nonsexual boundary without disrupting your alliance or endangering yourself by keep ‘gratitude’ in its right boundaries; being clear with yourself where these boundaries lie, and ensuring that you remain as professional as possible (Collingwood, 2016). You should be friendly but that does not make you a friend of the client, it is professional.
