Laws, ethics and values
Law relates to the guidelines governing how people ought to obey rules, but also identifies the rights and punishment for going against the law. Ethics relate to the guidelines that determine proper behavior in professional practice as identified by the professional bodies (Calley, 2009). Values are the principles that determine what right or are wrong, and are closely related to morality, while they depend on the environment, family culture and beliefs. Law, ethics and values are related as the focus on doing what is right based on some standard, but laws are imposed by the government. The law is based on justice, while violation of ethical codes may result in professional dismissal and discipline. An example of lawful but unethical practice is obtaining informed consent from the client, but breaching the confidentiality and talking to a third party is unethical.
NAADAC and ACA code of ethics
The NAADAC codes of ethics guides professional conduct for chemical dependence counselors, to ensure there is respect of autonomy, doing good and fair treatment. Equally, the ACA code of ethics highlights the importance of respecting the dignity of clients, honesty and ensuring there is no comprise on the client’s individuality (Ponton & Duba, 2009). Both of these Code of Ethics guidelines would be helpful as they highlight that protecting the rights of all clients without seeking personal gain improves the quality of services.
