The ultimate value of interpreting a text of Scripture is that we find ways to use it to help us grow personally and help others better understand what it means to follow Jesus. Refer back to an earlier week when we discussed the level of meaning: Meaning as Significance. This week you should (based upon your understanding of the text we have worked on) create either a Bible lesson or a sermon based on this text.

The Lesson (if that is your choice) should: (600 words or more)
a. Have clear objectives – both cognitive (what you want your students to learn) and behavioral responses (what you want your students to do because of what they have learned).
b. Your lesson should have a “learning activity” that can create interest in the cognitive objective.
c. How would you create a lesson which explains what you have learned about this text? Be creative and provide clear content that shows how you would do this.
d. How would you encourage your class to put into practice (conduct response) some aspect of the meaning of this text?
The sermon (if that is your choice) should: (600 words or more).
a. a clear focus statement - where, in a simple, concise, declarative statement (like a dominant theme) you say what you want to do in the sermon
b. a clear function statement - at the end of the sermon where you tell me what you want me to do behaviorally because I have heard your sermon - action plan
c. a body that makes up most of the content of the sermon - that reflects the meaning of the text we have studied - 2:5-11 - and show how you get from "focus to function" in a way that makes me think this is what God and Scripture is calling me to do.
d. An introduction (where you introduce the focus statement) and a conclusion (where you introduce the function statement.

Research Exercise Step 5: Philippians 2:5-11
Introduction
In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he encourages them to stay faithful and follow Christ’s example. Despite Paul being in prison, he gathers the courage to write this letter to his church to appreciate their continued support and encourage them to remain faithful in Christ. Paul further urges the Philippians to stay faithful in Christ and God, for only by doing so will they see the kingdom of heaven. Paul emphasizes that his church should stay humble, joyful, and obedient. In explaining these teachings, Paul uses Christ’s life as an example. He shows that Jesus lived a humble life, taking the nature of a servant. Christ was content and joyful in His life. Additionally, Jesus obeyed the will of God, although He knew it would lead to His death on the cross. Christ stayed obedient and humble in His life because He knew that God, the Father, would exalt Him to the highest level, giving His name power that exceeds all other names. God exalted Christ that every knee will bow in heaven, on earth, and under the earth at the mention of His name. Every tongue will acknowledge that Christ is Lord, to the glory of God, the Father. This sermon focuses on Christ’s teachings on life.
Bible Lesson
In our scripture, we see Paul overcoming his troubles and circumstances to strengthen the Christians in Philippi. From Paul's epistle, Christians get multiple lessons on how they can better and fulfil lives. Paul is determined to encourage them to live humble lives. In supporting the humility message, Paul uses Christ as an example, showing that despite Christ’s God-like nature, He remained humble and took the nature of a servant (Paul, 16ce). Humility is essential because it encourages a sense of togetherness among the people. Additionally, humility is the simplest virtue a Christian can have because when everyone is humble, they will not aim to outshine fellow Christians. Instead, they will celebrate their achievements. By acknowledging other people's successes and showing support towards them, as a Christian, one begins the journey to becoming humble. Following Christ's teachings, Christians will develop positive mindsets from the virtuous acts of humility accorded to them and acts of humility they will accord fellow Christians.
Another lesson Paul teaches Christians is to find joy in everything they do. During the writing of the epistle to Philippians, Paul was in prison. His circumstances did not forget his church in Philippi. He wrote the letter to thank them for their support and encourage them to remain faithful to Christ’s teachings.
