Introduction
Mormons are Christians who belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mormon religious culture was introduced in 1820 by Joseph Smith in New York. After the death of their founder, the group divided into members who are independent and others who do not practise the religion. Their cultural centre is in Utah, North America but many of them live away from the USA.
Mormon Cultural Beliefs
Mormons are strongly distinguished by the traditions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They believe in God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Moreover, the Bible is the word of God, but they have the Book of Mormon that addresses the appearances of Jesus to the ancient generations. The religion does not however have crosses because they believe that Jesus resurrected. In addition, they believe in a pre-earth existence and that they will join God after living on earth.
Mormonism was formerly associated with polygamy. The practice was however discredited by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Mormons who practice polygamy in the present day are the people who broke with the church. Contraception among married couples is also a decision that is made between the couple and God because the church believes in bearing children so that the spirit of God can live among people on earth. They also hold weddings and endowment ceremonies in temples, but their weekly services are held in a common chapel whereby they believe that singing is an important part in the worship of God (May, 2010).
