Prophet Muhammad is the founder of Islam and the Muslim faithful believe that he was God’s messenger. The prophet is widely revered and hence the strict nature of the Islam religion. Like other religions, Islam has its own practices as well as other unique physical objects that are used to show veneration to Prophet Muhammad. As expected, researchers have tried to document some of the ancient practices, texts, pieces of art as well as other physical objects that were used not only in the Islam religion but also in the rest. Christiane Gruber is one researcher who focused on Prophet Muhammad’s footprints and its significance to the Islam religion. It is believed that the prophet’s footprint possesses sentimental value to the Muslim and according to Gruber, “impressions of the Prophet’s foot or feet carried miraculous powers: they could heal, provide blessings, and confer a great deal of honor to their sites of consecration and conservation, as well as religious authority to their owners.” The Muslim believe that the prophet’s footprint carries with it blessings and “could bring good fortune to their pious possessors or visitors.” Aside from the prophet’s footprint, there are also texts and other commemorations that were used as to show respect and adoration to Prophet Muhammad. This article will elucidate on some of the ways that Prophet Muhammad has been venerated and esteemed by the Muslim.
Prophet Muhammad was fated to be a messenger of God and this can be attributed to the recognizable “seal of prophet hood” that the monk, Bohira, noticed “between the child’s shoulders.” From an early age, the prophet gave life and meaning to certain activities and events. For example, through his early profession, trading was made honorable and songs were sung to motivate young boys to learn the art. “For the prophet himself occupied himself with it, and made it important with all his energy.” Therefore, by involving themselves in trade, the Muslim faithful believe that they are indeed honoring the prophet.
The use of texts is also another way that the Muslim faithful have used to show veneration to Prophet Muhammad. Words are powerful and aside from showing honor, they can be used to spite and look down on other people. However, for Prophet Muhammad, they were only meant to honor and revere him. The Muslim faithful wrote poems and even composed songs for purposes of praising God’s messenger and also as a way of reaffirming their stance in him.
