Flash Fictions on Gluttony
The current technology has shortened the attention span of most readers. Therefore, writers are inventing better ways to communicate stories that appeal to audiences especially on their phones. Thus, they currently use flash fictions to capture the low-attentive audience. Such stories are normally less than 1,000 words with some as short as one page to a paragraph. Some flash fictions are normally interesting especially those that involve “Deadly sins”. Deadly sins are peccadillo that involves emotions which are experienced by everyone in a daily life. Such capital vices include lust, envy, greed, pride, gluttony, laziness, wrath and jealousy (a combination of envy and wrath). Based on the stated vices, the essay presents three flash fictions on gluttony.
The Mint Cake
Teacher Jane: One person who gets the answer right gets all the plates. Guess what is wrapped on the plates in front of you? (The three children stared at the three identically wrapped plates on the table with matching maroon plastic scoops. On the sides of the plates were saucers with cream, chocolate and a glass of mango juice).
Pete: Doughnuts
Johnny: Buns
Emily: Scones
Teacher Jane: Nope. They are cakes. Now choose your plate but you must wait for ten minutes while your eyes are closed. (Pete closed his eyes but could not wait for the ten minutes while Johnny closed his eyes while his hands were on the third plate. However, Emily never closed his eyes but stood at a distance).
Teacher Jane: Now open your plates.
Pete: Where is the mint one?
The Stale Bread
For several days in the last spring, we had not eaten bread. The family relied only on the remaining roasted steak. I dreamt that I was in an orchard nearby. I saw the juicy purple-green apple. Just when I was about to have a bite of the apple, I woke up. “Sam, wait!” I said. Sam was carrying a loaf of bread from the kitchen sideboard. I couldn’t wait for a portion of it.
