You will need to write no less than 400 words in the body of the paper, summarizing their personal life story of living with a psychotic disorder.
Be sure to document your paper with quotation marks, in-text citations, and an APA style reference page. Most of you are doing well with citations in your papers, which is critical in a psychology course.
Topic B
You may choose to write about psychotic disorders as they relate to the socio-cultural perspective. You can choose a specific category to research and write on. A couple of examples would be; if schizophrenia is actually more common in lower SES groups in the US, what are the social-political explanations as well as future implications? Another example is; how do the symptoms of schizophrenia manifest in other cultures? Describe the similarities and differences from western culture? Does a culture’s language change how an individual with schizophrenia will behave when in a psychotic break?

In this week’s assignment, please find an artist, celebrity, athlete, musician, politician or other public person who has openly discussed or published their issues with schizophrenia or psychosis.
Tom Harrell, a jazz composer, and musician was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1966 at 20 years of age, after a failed suicide attempt and having lived with mental health problems, but he was able to complete a B.A. degree in music composition (Milkowski, 2020). Harrell’s mental health problems worsened while undertaking his undergraduate and it became apparent that there was a need for a thorough mental evaluation. Additionally, Harrell took medication to stabilize his emotions, and he still uses psychotropic drugs, but these drugs also have crippling side effects (Milkowski, 2020). This is complicated when certain drugs do not match his symptoms and have adverse effects, and he has had to switch. Schizophrenia limits Harrell’s ability to be energetic like the elderly people who do not have the same condition.
Schizophrenia diagnosis and the drug-related symptoms affect Harrell’s fairly functioning, and antipsychotics have different side-effects. Even though many people suffering from paranoid schizophrenia are hospitalized, Harrell has been able to function better with the medication and playing music (Leung, 2003). There are delusions and the loss of sense of reality when he is not playing music, but it does not appear that he has disorganized thoughts. Harrell has in the past stated that he at times hears voices in his head and even as he does not talk much, he can communicate using music and still remain creative (Leung, 2003). The onset of paranoid schizophrenia tends to be later than in other types of schizophrenia, but Harrell was diagnosed as a young adult.
