Learning theories have significantly influenced teaching and learning and are widely accepted by many instructors and educators all over the globe. The constructivist theory has modified the teaching of many disciplines, particularly science and mathematics. Clements and Battista (as cited in Noorloos et al., 2017) argued that ‘A key tenet of constructivism is that knowledge cannot be transmitted in any direct way to students; instead, they construct knowledge themselves based on their experiences and social environment.’ This has been the foundation of constructivist education.
The concepts of constructivism theory are extensively used in teaching and learning of mathematics. Mathematical knowledge cannot be received passively through communication but can only receive through active construction and build up knowledge in a deliberate cognition of the subject. For instance, the students cannot learn Mathematics by just coming across mathematical formula or in a normal conversation. They can learn through active studying, teaching or discussions.
