Tendler’s Article Summary and My Opinion Article Summary Aron Tendler’s “COVID-19 Has Accelerated the Mental Health Crisis” depicts that coronavirus has brought the issue of mental health into the spotlight. Based on a recent report by The Lancet, the COVID-19 pandemic caused about 53 million cases of depressive disorder and 76 million cases of anxiety disorders (Tendler, 2021). However, even before the pandemic, mental diseases were among the major causes of disabilities. Individuals think that mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression, affect only a small proportion occasionally. Young adults were the significantly influenced demographic by mental health problems during the coronavirus pandemic. Individuals had to deal with the impacts of COVID-19, loneliness due to an extended period of shutdowns, social distancing, and numerous insecurities associated with the deadly virus. Some of them lost their source of income and experienced sleep difficulties, overwhelming stress and anxiety, and obesity. As a result, coronavirus triggered physical, financial, and emotional stress. The primary factor that contributes to the prevalence of mental illnesses is the lack of enough qualified healthcare professionals. For instance, one out of two individuals in the United States of America (USA) struggles with a mental disease without seeking help from qualified psychiatrists (Tendler, 2021). The shortage of psychiatrists deteriorated during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the unprecedented number of people that were affected. In some cases, qualified therapists refused to take insurance and required individuals to pay out-of-pocket. Some mental illnesses cannot be addressed through telehealth. For example, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar mania, panic disorder, major depression, substance abuse disorder, psychosis, and social phobia are some mental diseases that cannot be treated without the psychiatrist being in the same room with the patient.
