Target Behavior Report
Part 1
Stress is such a common word and when someone says they are stressed, people never take it seriously nowadays. The assumption is that they are throwing a tantrum or that they are trying to get everyone’s attention. However, while taking this course, I have come to learn that stress is a major issue today. Many people are stressed but only a few take it seriously enough to act. The majority who see their frustrations, insomnia, uncontrolled anger, and anxiety as normal occurrences. However, these could be symptoms or indications of stress, and those who take a keen interest in their mental health will book appointments with their therapists. One key thing that I learned in the first half of this course is that I need to be observant of myself. I need to watch out for all the symptoms I’ve listed above (and others). At times, we can be under a lot of pressure and start acting out not knowing that we are stressed and in need of rest or a visit to the therapist. As Hans Selye said, “stress is a scientific concept which has suffered from the mixed blessing of being too well known and too little understood.” The assumptions people make are often based on what they believe to be true regarding stress. However, as Selye said, stress is too little understood and its impact downplayed.
Another issue or concept that stood out for me is the Yerkes-Dodson Principle. From the book, this principle implies “that to a certain point, a specific amount of stress is healthy, useful, and even beneficial.” Apparently, stress can be turned into something useful and in the end, it can influence the health and well-being of a person. Before this course, stress was something I needed to avoid at all costs. I never looked at stress as something beneficial. However, the Yerkes-Dodson Principle makes it clear that on some occasions, stress can be a motivating factor that can influence performance. The examples given include sporting events, social activities, creative activities, and academic pursuits. However, one has to be aware of their stress levels and avoid it getting to levels that are harmful to their health.
Learning about holistic health also greatly impacted me. When people talk about health, what comes to mind is the physical aspect of health. However, the idea of holistic health “encompasses physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and social dimensions.” These have to be kept at a certain balance. When this balance is distorted and one of the components is left unchecked, one’s health could be in jeopardy. Learning about this term has helped me understand that I ought to find ways to grow and watch my health holistically. Each component impacts my wellbeing, therefore, I have to make sure each is tended to.
Assessments Chosen and Rationale
The four assessments that I chose include Assess your stress, Symptoms of stress, Perceived stress scale, and Ardell wellness stress.
Description, Rationale, and Findings
Assess Your Stress is a tool that focuses on a person’s physiological indicators. These are one’s breathing pattern, respiration rate, resting heart rate, and stres...
