Since the Industrial Revolution, criminal street gangs have significantly increased, mostly involving young people in marginalized societies. The minority population over the years faced challenges and barriers when the issue of equality arose. Specifically, accessing quality mental health care, among other factors, was a source of conflict (Vigil 2016). As compared to the dominant social group, the minority are relatively disadvantaged and prone to differential treatment in almost every aspect of life. The structural inequalities in societies accelerate the growth of street gangs and criminal activities.
Faced with limited opportunities, the racial minorities face barriers in gaining employment, thus limited choices resulting in the formation of street gangs for financial gains. A wider unemployment gap exists between the majority and the minority.
