1 The principle of maleficence and beneficence posits that research in the field must not only take into account the immediate effects of the study (i.e., physical harm) but also its long-lasting effects. In the Stanford Prison Experiment, it was shown how the participants, acting as prisoners, have suffered emotional and psychological trauma on the part of the guards, despite all the debriefing processes that the researchers have done.
