Self-esteem is confidence in an individual's worth or abilities to face and handle different life aspects (Riquelme et al., 2018). In the past decades, some studies on age and gender differences in self-esteem have shown that men have higher self-esteem compared to women during adolescence and adulthood. The difference in self-esteem for males and females during adolescence and emerging adulthood is contributed by some factors such as puberty changes, career orientation, and society's view. Although there is a difference in self-esteem for males and females during adolescence and emerging adulthood, parents and guardians need to try and raise their children's self-esteem for performance.
During puberty, males and females experience different body changes, and their response affects their self-esteem. For example, males being to break their voice makes them excited about entering into a new stage of life, hence hiking their self-esteem. On the other hand, females experience menstruation and breast growth, which makes them shy and how they relate to others around them, lowering their self-esteem (Riquelme et al., 2018). The body changes in males during adolescence are more favorable than in females, which creates a difference in self-esteem levels. Hence, it is crucial to create awareness among adolescent females and make them understand their body changes to strengthen their self-esteem. It will make them realize and understand their worth regarding body changes to enable them to do away with the changes.
