Response to Children of the Garden Island by Emmy E. Werner
Children growing up in depriving conditions experience and accumulate emotional and physical challenges throughout their lives. However, some individuals cope with these challenges to pursue successful careers and become influential figures as adults. The article “Children of the Garden Island” by Emmy E. Werner presents a 1965 psychological study that aimed at investigating how different individuals can overcome deprived childhood and physical disadvantages as they grow up. 698 infants from the Hawaiian island of Kauai participated in the study whose main goals included the assessment of long-term effects of pre- and perinatal stress and to report on the effects of early childhood upbringing conditions of the psychosocial, cognitive, and physical development among children.
