Edward Said’s Orientalist theory is perhaps one of the most crucial frameworks when trying to understand different cultures through a culturally relativistic point of view. Generally, his theory believes that throughout the centuries, writings of Western scholars (and actions of Western societies) have viewed Eastern countries using a lens that is created and shaped by Western beliefs, thereby espousing a biased and stereotypical understanding of other societies (Said, 1997). More particularly, he discussed that one of the reasons why the Orientalist perspective has perpetuated through time was the fact that most genre, including films, literature, scholarly works, and even art, have embraced the idea that the Western way of life is the standard that all cultures must aspire to have.
