Motivation is the driving force behind any activity that an individual engages in. It pushes individuals to work towards meeting and maintaining their goals in life. Motivation is categorized into extrinsic and intrinsic. While external forces and demands drive extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation emanates from internal forces that drive an individual to do things out of love and feeling right (Editorial Staff, 2022).
Intrinsic motivation is the best form of motivation to explain drug abuse and alcoholism because it derives from internal driving forces in the person. This internal driving force pushes the individual to take the necessary action based on the situation they have been subjected to. In addition, intrinsic motivation provides individuals with benefits that include but are not limited to creative thinking, psychological wellness, and increased learning capabilities.
