Hofstede and Diversity

Assignments Hofstede and diversity:
Try to do this assignment with another student of your group, or with a person in your environment, preferably with a different cultural background than yourself.
Read again pages 21-22 about the Cultural Values of Hofstede.
Find out together what the six dimensions mean in both of your cultures, and give it a number between 1-5 (1=high/ 5=low) and motivate with an example for each dimension.

Power distance
Culture A (Vietnam): score 1
Culture B (Denmark): score 4
Example
In culture A; it is normal that you always speak to your boss in a formal way, if you don’t agree with your boss you won’t tell him/her directly- that would be considered as very rude.
In culture B: it is normal to speak informally with your boss; you can call him/her by his/her first name. When you do not agree with something, it is considered as valuable to discuss this openly with your boss. He/she will consider this as feedback.

Power Distance
1 Culture A (United States): Score 4
2 Culture B (Philippines): Score 2
In the United States, power distance is low especially in innovative and small startups where a flatter organizational structure is embraced. In the Philippines, however, heirarchy is embraced in the organizational structure specially for corporate or for-profit organizational settings.
Uncertainty Avoidance Index
1 Culture A (United States): Score 3
2 Culture B (Philippines): Score 4
In the United States, uncertainty avoidance is relatively higher as evidenced by the number of risk mitigating mechanisms that people use and subscribe to such as insurance and retirement plans. In the Philippines, risk mitigation is lower since significantly lower number of citizens subscribe to insurance policies and retirement plans, particularly privately offered ones.
