The Roots of the Scientific Study of Learning and Behavior
Behavior can only be understood through the study of how the brain functions. According to Stangor & Walinga (2014), all behaviors are controlled by the central nervous system. Thus, the brain coordinates all activities and they cannot be accomplished without the involvement. There are four major key factors in the focus of learning and behavior including, sensation and perception, control and movement, learning and memory, and emotion (Stangor & Walinga, 2014). These factors institute issues that trigger certain behaviors. For instance, sleep is a coordination between the body and the brain that the body might be needing rest and the brain must be conformed to the activity for successful accomplishment. The advancement in learning and behavior studies has yielded more advanced topics such as language, reasoning, and decision-making (Stangor & Walinga, 2014). Although the aspects may not have been discussed prior to the advancements, they are essential in the study of learning and behavior.
On the other hand, there is a significant relationship between behavior and biological psychology. The interactions in biological aspects yield the various behaviors revealed under different circumstances. Biological psychology is rooted in structural and functional studies (Stangor & Walinga, 2014). The early functionalist and structuralist believed that understanding the mind required a basis in the study of conscious thoughts. Stangor & Walinga (2014) argue that the study focused on systematic behaviors. Besides, the behavior is nothing but an illustration of the thoughts in the mind.
