Heinz Dilemma
Read textbook section 11.19 (Advances in reasoning). Talk to a member of your household who is 10 years old or older, or call a friend or family member. Read the Heinz dilemma to them (Figure 11.51 in your textbook). Then ask them, "Should the husband have done that?” “Why do you think that?" Then ask them to explain their reasoning in more detail. In your essay, summarize their response. Would Kohlberg would classify their response as an example of reasoning in the Preconventional Stage, the Conventional Stage, or the Postconventional Stage? What was it about their response led you to select that stage? (Be kind and professional during your interview. For example, do not say things like, “Hey, you fall at Kohlberg’s lowest stage of moral reasoning!” We will discuss critiques of Kohlberg’s approach in class.)

Response to the Heinz Dilemma
Heinz desperately needed money to purchase lifesaving medicine for his wife. He had exhausted all other means of getting it, yet he could only come up with half the required amount, and time was running out for her. Desperate times called for desperate measures, and Heinz decided to break into the drugstore and steal some medication to save his beloved spouse's life. Even though morally, it was wrong, this action ultimately saved someone's life, which is far more important than any law or regulation. This behavior shows that love should always be more significant than anything else, as putting an individual's safety at risk solely out of devotion is an admirable act people can hardly see today.
Most would have turned away, but Heinz chose not to, proving that sometimes, taking extreme steps toward achieving goals is necessary, no matter how unlawful they may seem on paper....
